Chopwell Primary School DigitalMe - Life in Lockdown
Digital Voice for Communities has been working with children from Chopwell Primary School about life in lockdown. Funded by Northumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, the DigitalMe project has allowed children to express their personalities through a digital avatar to keep their anonymity.
Participants drew their faces as self-portraits on paper, which Digital Voice then animated to speak a script the children developed and recorded. The process was adapted so that Digital Voice and the school could work remotely on digital assignments. Students filled in fun handouts about how the Covid-19 restrictions had affected their feelings and mental health.
“We've all loved working with Digital Voice on this project. It's been really professionally run and the end product is not only gorgeous but a part of 'living history'. We'll be able to look back at it in years to come and see what it was like for the children of Chopwell Primary. We can't thank Digital Voice enough.”

Focusing on building self-esteem, the children were asked to draw themselves and think about their qualities and strengths. Digital Voice interviewed them through zoom chats together with a parent or teacher, then collated all the material into colourful collages to share with participants and professionals.
“The project has improved the confidence and self-esteem of participants – by engaging them in creative self-expression so their voices are heard – and the understanding people have about their situation. It has strengthened the support network in place for them.”
