Robin Cowings
We’re shining the spotlight on our brilliant team of freelancers who make Digital Voice what is it today and this week it’s Robin Cowings, who is usually behind the lens not in front of it!
Robin is a professional photographer and lecturer in photography. After completing a Media Production Degree at Newcastle Polytechnic, he initially worked in editorial photography for local magazines, shooting brands and fashion. From there he started teaching at the FE colleges across the North East. Robin has been working for Digital Voice from the very beginning and leads on one of our longest running projects, PhotoClub.
Newcastle Council’s Arts Connect have been funding PhotoClub for over 10 years which is a testament to its continuing success.
Robin describes what the club is all about:
“It is a regular space for families with children and young people with and without additional needs to come together and be creative in a friendly, informal setting. From a base at Newcastle City Library, our families get out and explore the wonderful range of places, both urban and rural, that the North East has to offer. Their work is then celebrated in a public exhibition.”
Robin has been a key part of the success of the project. His passion for photography has supported so many young people and their families to produce amazing work about the places they love.
Robin is also involved in other projects with us and was part of the team that won the RTS Award for Innovation in 2019, for our DigitalMe programme. Like most of our freelancers he finds it hard to pick a favourite project but he really enjoyed the work on the Grainger Market documentary photography project:
“It’s great to work on longer-term projects like documenting the Grainger Market in Newcastle. There’s an opportunity for groups to really get their teeth into a sophisticated level of social storytelling.”
Thanks for all your hard work Robin, long may it continue!
