Tay Street School
There was a lot of colliery housing on Tay Street. The school was built in 1910 and started as a girls’ senior school before changing to a primary and infant school. I remember the garden had a pond full of goldfish and the caretaker had a dog that everyone liked. I remember the hall and the classrooms were big, or maybe I was small? During the war there were air raid shelters in the middle of the school.
It closed down after the pit closed as lots of people moved out of the village. They had to demolish it eventually as it was slowly sliding down the hill!
