The Kings Cinema
The King’s was built in 1910, a cinema first then a Bingo hall. It burned down in 1920 but luckily for us, it was rebuilt. This was where you’d do your courting, taking someone to see a double header or if you were a kid, watching a film on a Saturday morning. We’d have to pay with jam jars because we didn’t have any money and they’d recycle the glass. This was the place you met Roy Rogers, Tonto and Flash Gordon, up there on that huge screen. They sometimes had live shows, the first three rows would cost 4d.
