Recipe for Success: one group’s response to the cost of living crisis

Social media is awash with ways to save money. ‘Feed a family of four for £25 per week’ promises one, while others weigh up the virtue of heated clothes rails vs tumble dryers. For a lot of people, however, it’s much more serious than this, they’re making decisions about heating and food that is an either/or situation.  The North East is bracing itself and across our region, community groups continue to be resilient and resourceful in the face of yet more cuts.

One such group is our friends at Speaking up Together, a self-advocacy group for people with additional needs in Gateshead. They’re working with us again on one of our iSkills courses, this time it will be how they can use TikTok as a way to help others.  They’ve realised that it’s never been more important to have the skills to make money go further but not everyone has them.

Our iSkills courses equip beginners with digital skills so that they can give their unique perspective on a subject they care about. The Speaking up Together group is already bursting with ideas and hopes to demonstrate how to apply numeracy skills in a fun and accessible way.

We can’t wait to see the results. Watch our social media for the results from December: https://www.instagram.com/dvdigitalskills

Huge thanks to Gateshead Council’s Multiply fund for making this project possible.
