Chopwell Memories Film Premiere

In a year that none of us will forget in a hurry, the team at Digital Voice were determined not to let the lockdown get in the way of their storytelling project. Chopwell Memories is a unique collection of films created by local residents. The village in west Gateshead has a rich history, and the participants gave their time to capture and preserve a range of stories that provide a fascinating insight into life there. Whether that be a story about school days, playing in the woods, working in the mines or how people let their hair down on a Saturday night, each one was told with openness, honesty and that great North East sense of humour.

The participants were given the VIP treatment at a premiere of the films at Chopwell Community Centre, attended by Councillor Dot Burnett, Mayor of Gateshead.

Whilst they didn’t have an actual red carpet, there was a definite air of excitement in the Community Centre and hopefully a day that will live long in the memory.

Brought back some wonderful childhood memories. Very enjoyable films.

Watch all of the films in full here:

Every child wants to have fun; can you imagine having a whole village and woodland as your playground? Circle of Adventure tells us the stories of how children used to play in Chopwell.

The Last Leg

The mines in Chopwell will never be forgotten. This film tells us of the struggles the miners went through and how their families remember the events of each day living in a mining community.

The Start of a Career

Harry Collinson tells us of his father’s journey to Canada to look for work after the miners strike and how this started out hopefully for the miners’ future.

The Best Day at School Ever

From milk mats to favourite teachers, this film tells of the memories residents from Chopwell have of their time in school; it was very different to today!

A Dollars Worth

The Silver Dollars were a well-known band in the North East of England in the 1960s. Originally from Chopwell, Silver Dollars drummer Ken Manning tells us their story.

Once Upon A Village

Once Upon a Village is a film filled with tales of family fun, cheeky antics and memories the residents have of growing up in the village of Chopwell! Produced by Digital Voice in partnership with Chopwell Regeneration Group this project has been funded by The Heritage Lottery.
