Bring your local history to life with this intergenerational project for the whole community.

GeoStories is a local heritage project where members of the community work together to tell stories about their neighbourhood.

Guided by Digital Voice experts, we work with a small team of adults to teach them how to use iPads. Assisted by young people from local schools, they interview local people, collect photographs and use these to create short films and interactive digital materials.

The stories bring together public and private archives to create a personal history of the local area. GeoStories can be turned into short films, an interactive map, or can even be displayed at an exhibition.

“It was such a moving and emotional event. There was so much a feeling of connection between everyone there and between the past and the present. I loved linking the memories of the old with activities for the very young, creating history that they will look back on in years to come.”

Share community history

Develop a positive sense of place, identity and community by being involved in a local project that creates a positive image of the past and present.

Listen to locals

Hear stories and forgotten tales from people who’ve lived in the area across the generations. Watch as those stories are brought to life in short films.

Understand local heritage

Bring communities together and understand how local heritage has shaped your area as it is today.

“It was more than I hoped it would be, many thanks to Digital Voice for making it a reality, and thanks to all the people who donated pics and memories, it's been amazing.”

Helen Neasham

The benefits of Geostories

A local history book

GeoStories is an opportunity for a community to have a living history book of their own heritage available for anyone to see and use, including schools, community groups and local history groups.

Boosts digital skills

Gain a wide range of skills including effective communication, research, archiving, event planning and mixed media production.

Build confidence

GeoStories builds people’s confidence both digitally, and socially. Older adults share memories and learn new skills, while young people have the opportunity to learn about their heritage and learn filmmaking.

Is Geostories for me?

This project works well for a community group who is interested in offering people a chance to build their digital skills, while also learning more about their community.

We work with groups of adults and young people, however GeoStories is a project that brings everyone together across the community. From finding people to interview to watching the films online - everyone can be involved.
