The Lightning Machine: Behind the Scenes at High Spen Film Club

“Thanks again to our friends from Digital Voice for Communities, for their help and guidance. What a cracking opportunity for the children involved!”

Andrew Firth, Headteacher, High Spen Primary School

At the heart of all our projects and programmes are stories. We’re fascinated by what people have to say and we empower them to share those stories digitally; our film clubs are a perfect example of how we can combine digital skills and individual creativity.

At High Spen Primary, Year 6 pupils created a film from start to finish, working with members of the Digital Voice team.

The process included: sharing ideas; agreeing on a story and developing the narrative; storyboarding; filming; editing; creating credits in Procreate.

And as if that wasn’t enough, they starred in the films too!

Their ‘making of’ film gives you a peek behind the scenes.

Ronnie Johnson from Digital Voice reflects on why FilmClub works so well:

“Film Club helps young people develop a range of new skills and builds their confidence. As well as the practical skills, they demonstrate leadership skills, problem solving and teamwork. With the right support and encouragement, they take an idea and run with it. It’s also really important to us that they have fun and they definitely did!”

Feedback from pupils and parents has been very positive:

The films were  shared with the whole school in an assembly and were given a great reception.

Now’s your chance to watch their brilliant film The Lightning Machine here.

Thanks to the Community Foundation, Tyne & Wear and Northumberland for funding this project.
