inTouch: Building confidence in digital
Lesley signed up to the inTouch basic digital skills course because she had suffered some memory loss due to illness. She wanted to refresh her tech knowledge and gain confidence using the internet and her own devices. She is currently writing a book about her life so it was really important for her to update her skills.
At the beginning of the course she felt fairly confident with emails but wanted to learn more about how to identify and deal with spam emails and scams. She didn’t really have much of an understanding of using an iPad and wasn’t confident with using the internet in general.
Lesley was used to using android devices but got to grips with the basic gestures and commands really quickly; she liked how simple the iPads were to use once she got the hang of them and the fact that everything seemed to be user-friendly and connected. She now intends to purchase her own iPad for her work.
She found the jargon-busting activity really helpful in the first session and asked if we could cover things like internet shopping and setting up a google account for storage and organisational purposes. She expanded her current knowledge on emails finding it useful to know how to attach things like photographs, scanned images and documents.
By the end of the course Lesley felt more confident in all areas. She still had some concerns regarding staying safe online but was happy she knew more about how to protect herself and her details. She was also happy to know where to look online for advice as she had found helpful websites to refer to in the future.
"The course is helping alleviate my tech anxieties, for example I feel more confident with the knowledge I’ve learnt about how to stay safe online.”
"I’m really pleased the tutors tailored the course to my tech needs”
"I have gained so many transferable skills that I feel I can use across all my digital devices in my everyday life.”
Special thanks to the Millin charity for asking us to deliver the course!
