Geostories Project

A group of young carers and a group of older people joined forces to produce this innovative intergenerational media project.

I have become more adventurous in using technology. This is the best hands on learning experience I have attended.

Who Took Part

A group of young carers and a group of older people joined forces to produce this innovative intergenerational media project.

purpose

The groups wanted to make films which reflected the stories of the older people and their area: the west of Gateshead.

    What Happened

The young people received training in filming short documentaries on iPads; they learned interviewing, filming, sound and editing skills. They they then worked with the older group to find out about their lives, particularly when they were young ‒ mostly this was during the war and the younger group found this very interesting. The older people also received training on iPads to scan and use their photos from those times to slot into the films. They also did some archive research for relevant images online and at Beamish Museum, so gained great hands-on experience of using IT.

Results

The result is an interactive map where the ‘geostories’ of the older people can be watched. It can be accessed through the following link:

Benefits for Participants

This was an exciting opportunity to develop and share skills in different ways as well as to meet people from different generations, learning about their lives and the past in an innovative way. The younger group especially enjoyed editing the films and the older ones also had the chance to learn filming skills from the young carers.

Funder

Gateshead Council’s Adult Learning Team funded the project which was supported by Crossroads Young Carers and Rowlands Gill Live at Home Scheme.

Who Else Would Benefit From This Sort of Project

This approach is a very effective way of involving different groups of people to develop their creativity and IT skills together, but could be delivered with any group of any age.
