Blakelaw....How it is

Children and young people from Blakelaw Youth Club designed and produced this film and animation project.

It was a great experience for the young people at Blakelaw to explore issues in their local community through the medium of film.

Who Took Part

Children and young people from Blakelaw Youth Club designed and produced this film and animation project.

Purpose

The group wanted to show local decision-makers what they thought of their area, whilst having fun and learning new skills.

What Happened

The group looked at what they liked and wanted to improve in Blakelaw. They decided to focus on the most important issues to them by interviewing people of all ages. We trained them to use iPods to film which they really enjoyed. They then showed the problems they raised on film, and their solutions using animation.

Results

The result is a lovely film which addresses issues such as street lighting and vandalism whilst showing that people love the area and its community spirit.

Sharing the Results with Others

The group organised a screening for their families and local councillors, which was a great success. The film was then presented to the local ward committee who pledged to take the points on board and help to improve the park, which was the major concern highlighted in the film.

Benefits for Participants

The group had lots of fun and felt empowered to see their views were listened to.

Client and/or Funder

Newcastle City Council’s Arts Development Team funded the project which was supported by Northumberland Clubs for Young People.
