"Lost Village of Milkwell Burn and Other Tales" Screening

4th April 2019

With thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the residents of the Derwent Valley, Digital Voice’s latest GeoStories project engaged over seventy local people. We taught the residents filmmaking and photo editing skills to document the history of the area and create a lasting reminder for future generations.

MP Laura Pidcock made an appearance to open the event and introduce our films and archive photographs. Local residents shared their memories of happy and hard times in Derwent Valley mining villages.

The event brought together many people who had grown up in the Derwent Valley and shared common memories. It was fantastic to see members of the community coming together, meeting forgotten friends and laughing about their memories. In particular, it was enlightening to see those who were born in the now lost village of Milkwell Burn bring their stories together.

Also present were the children who had worked hard to create merged images of their Derwent Valley, with images from the past.

The community was also treated to a performance by local singing group Mouthful, who brought to life some of the stories told by participants.

If you missed out on the exhibition or would like to share any media exhibited, you can access the films on YouTube and the photographs on our Flickr page .
