Harold Secue

Harold participated in a week long training and film production project about human rights in Colombia. He was chosen as a member of an Indigenous People’s Youth Forum to take part in the project we’d been asked to deliver with them.

He had an interest in filmmaking as a way to raise awareness of human rights violations against his people and so was eager to take part in a media production course.

Purpose of Involvement

To learn practical skills which he and others could disseminate to other indigenous people in their areas. The task for the week was to plan, shoot and edit a film documenting a human rights conference.

What the Participants Say

Harold said: ”Thank you for the great opportunity to make a film with you. I now make films for my organisation, ACIN, which promotes human rights for indigenous people.”

What Happened

The group were given intensive training in camera, audio and interviewing skills then mentored through the processes of production. After the event they edited the film, wrote the voiceover and recorded it. The film was finished within one week.

Harold showed great enthusiasm for learning as much as possible form the media professionals we sent out to train him. He asked many questions and really developed his skills by watching and listening to the producer and editor working with him.

Benefits for Participants

Harold was able to improve his skills by taking advantage of our small group and one-to-one mentoring so that he is now confident to produce and edit his own films about issues which matter to him. He has found a practical outlet for the voice of his people.

Sharing the Results with Others

The film has been screened at young people’s events in Colombia.
